02That sounds like a ridiculous question, doesn’t it – is your bedroom a place of rest? Believe it or not, the bedroom is the last people redecorate or renovate when making decisions for their entire home.

In an article in The Kansas City Star House + Home in December, I talked about how you can get more rest in the new year. Studies show that when you don’t get enough rest, your whole body is negatively affected. So, here are some very simple solutions to creating a more restful place for yourself this year.

  • A great bed is the key, including sumptuous sheets that have a higher thread count. Go for the more exotic fiber like bamboo, for example; it gets softer with every wash.
  • A headboard isn’t necessary but it may make you more comfortable when reading in bed.
  • Having a TV in your bedroom is probably not going to help in the rest department but some technology, such as an iPad or Kindle, or just a regular old paperback book, is OK to bring to bed. In fact, reading is said to help you get sleepier if you have trouble falling asleep. It’s the eye movement back and forth, over and over, that can help those peepers get ready for slumber.
  • Color is something else to consider. To make the room more of a retreat, use lighter, softer colors. Greens, blue-grays and gray-browns are good choices. My top pick is the warm Functional Gray from Sherwin-Williams.
  • One other thing that will help you rest better is mood lighting. Most people buy lamps that are too short. If you’re sitting up in bed, you want the bottom of the shade to be at eye level.

So get more rest right away! You could even get it done for your significant other for Valentines. That’s not a bad way to start the year!
